Gospić massacres and missing Serbian victims
Overview
On the 35th anniversary of the 1991 killings of Serbian civilians in Gospić, advocates and regional leaders are calling for justice and the recovery of remains. Documentation from the Veritas center indicates that at least 129 Serbs were killed in the area, including 39 women, with a significant portion of the violence occurring between October 16 and 18, 1991.
Miodrag Linta, President of the Alliance of Serbs in the Region, stated that approximately 250 people were arrested and taken in an unknown direction during the events. While 60 victims' remains have been identified and buried, searches continue for the remains of approximately 69 to 70 missing individuals.
Although Tihomir Orešković, Mirko Norac, and Stjepan Grandić were previously sentenced to prison for war crimes against the civilian population, Linta emphasized that many others involved in the planning and execution of the crimes have not been held accountable. He characterized the violence and the destruction of the local Serbian Orthodox Church as part of a broader pattern of systematic pressure and discrimination against Serbs following the rise of the Tuđman regime.
