Governance and security developments in Benue State

Overview

In late July 2026, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia inaugurated a 15-member Economic and Policy Advisory Team to focus on governance and investment. This period was marked by significant violence, including a deadly gunmen attack on the Efeyi community in the Ugboju District that resulted in dozens of deaths. In response to such insecurity, the Inspector-General of Police announced a 14-day special security operation in the state.

By late August, Governor Alia implemented administrative and security reforms. These included a cabinet reshuffle involving seven newly sworn-in commissioners and the establishment of three military operational units in the Sankera axis at Agu, Anyiin, and Azendeshi. To bolster local patrols, the Governor provided 30 motorcycles to security agencies in the Katsina-Ala, Ukum, and Logo local government areas. Additionally, the Governor addressed infrastructure and land use, proposing a 460-megawatt dam and stating that no land would be ceded to pastoralists without local consent.
