Grab driver protests and regulatory review in Vietnam

Grab drivers in Vietnam organized a coordinated two-day strike on September 12 and 13, 2026, to protest low fares, high commission rates, and rising operational costs. Drivers reported that shrinking net incomes were often insufficient to cover fuel and vehicle maintenance.

In response to these protests, Vietnam’s National Competition Commission (NCC) launched a review of Grab’s pricing, fee, and discount policies. The commission requested detailed documentation from Grab regarding how fares and deductions are determined and has expanded its data collection to include other ride-hailing platforms in the country to conduct a broader market assessment.

Grab responded by stating that drivers have the autonomy to choose their working hours and that the company will not penalize or deactivate accounts for those choosing to temporarily stop working. However, the company warned that drivers using the app to place orders without the intent to use the service could face suspension under its code of conduct.

Concurrently, authorities in Hanoi have taken action against social media users for spreading unverified claims that Grab services were paralyzed by a mass strike. Police confirmed that the calls for a coordinated blackout were largely driven by individuals seeking social media engagement rather than an official company-wide movement.
