Gran Concepción public transport payment transition

Overview

Authorities in the Gran Concepción region of Chile have initiated a verification process for National Student Card (TNE) chips to prepare for a new electronic payment system. This process, led by the Bío Bío Regional Ministry of Transport and Junaeb, involves visiting higher education institutions and schools to ensure compatibility for over 159,000 student cards.

Following the verification phase, the sale of electronic payment cards is scheduled to begin on November 2, 2026, supported by the opening of a User Service Center in San Pedro de la Paz. The system, managed by BusappConce, will enter a trial period from December 1, 2026, through February 2027. A complete transition to 100% electronic payments, which will eliminate cash payments on board, is expected by March 1, 2027.
