Grand Kartal Hotel fire justice protests

Overview

Following a fire at the Grand Kartal Hotel in Bolu that resulted in 78 deaths, including 36 children, families of the victims organized a justice vigil at Anıtpark in Ankara. The protest, titled ‘Justice Watch for 78 Lives’, utilized symbolic displays such as 78 chairs adorned with carnations to represent the deceased.

Participants demanded that the Court of Cassation uphold previous convictions and called for investigations into officials from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.

After three days, the vigil concluded. While the Bolu 1st High Criminal Court had previously sentenced 11 suspects, including hotel owner Halit Ergül, to life imprisonment, families maintained that these measures were insufficient. They continued to seek accountability from the Ministry of Interior and other government institutions. During the demonstration, political figures from the Yeniden Refah Party and the DEM Party visited the families to offer support.
