Greece-Italy naval defense cooperation
Overview
Greece and Italy have entered into defense cooperation agreements focused on naval modernization. In September 2026, the two nations signed a deal for Greece to acquire two second-hand FREMM frigates currently serving in the Italian Navy. The agreement, supported by shipbuilder Fincantieri, is estimated to be worth approximately 2 to 3 billion euros.
Following this, in October 2026, discussions expanded to include the potential acquisition of two Italian minehunters. Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias raised this proposal during a meeting with Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto in Venice. The acquisition of minehunters is intended to bolster the Hellenic Navy’s capacity to secure maritime communication routes and critical infrastructure in the Aegean and Mediterranean.
