Greece-UAE strategic partnership expansion
Overview
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met to discuss strengthening strategic cooperation and regional stability. During initial discussions, Mitsotakis expressed support for the Crown Prince’s candidacy for United Nations Secretary-General.
Following these talks, the Crown Prince arrived in Athens to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations. Accompanied by a high-level business delegation of approximately 60 people, the visit resulted in the announcement of 18 memorandums of understanding and commercial partnerships valued at a total of €12.75 billion. These agreements span strategic sectors including digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, healthcare, and food security.
The visit also included the renewal of a three-year agreement between Mubadala and the Hellenic Development Bank. A major development involves the potential formation of a Greek-Emirati construction consortium to bid for projects in the Middle East and North Africa, with a projected value of up to $10 billion. During the UAE-Greece Strategic Forum in Athens, discussions also focused on expanding joint investment initiatives, such as a €4 billion program. Mitsotakis emphasized Greece’s role as a bridge between Europe and the Gulf, noting the relationship has evolved into a deep strategic alliance covering security and technology.
During the official visit, Sheikh Khaled reviewed major UAE-led strategic investments, specifically focusing on the renewable energy and healthcare sectors. This included briefings on TERNA ENERGY, which was acquired by Masdar in 2025 for €3.2 billion, and the Hellenic Healthcare Group, in which PureHealth acquired a 60% stake for €800 million in 2025. Additionally, the Crown Prince visited a Technical Training & Qualification Centre to meet with Emirati military students undergoing specialized training in Greece.
