While ECMWF data indicates a generally warmer European winter due to Atlantic air masses, specific periods of snowfall are anticipated. Weather forecaster Fani Chatzigriva, utilizing traditional Meromimia observations, notes an increased probability of snow around the Christmas period (December 21–27, 2026). January 2027 is expected to remain intensely wintry, with potential snowfall at low altitudes between January 17 and 20, and a strong cold episode between January 23 and 25. A final dynamic winter period or cold wave is also anticipated during the last ten days of February, primarily affecting northern and eastern Greece. This second heatwave may be followed by a sudden temperature drop accompanied by heavy rain and storms. Medical experts have noted that these rising heat events pose increasing public health risks, specifically regarding morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal issues, particularly among vulnerable populations. As of late August 2026, Greece has been experiencing intense heatwaves with temperatures between 40°C and 42°C, alongside high winds in the Aegean increasing wildfire risks.
