Overview

In early July 2026 a wildfire on Greece’s Halkidiki peninsula triggered evacuations and a joint response involving fire crews, a helicopter and Canadair aircraft. Later that month separate blazes erupted on the Greek island of Paros and in Cyprus’s Kalo Horio area, prompting each country to mobilise hundreds of personnel, dozens of fire‑engine vehicles, bulldozers, planes and helicopters, and to operate coordinated command centres.

On 28 July 2026 a fast‑moving fire ignited near Kampi, close to Agios Charalambos on Paros. Beaufort 7‑8 winds drove the blaze across dry vegetation, prompting Greece’s 112 emergency system to issue alerts and order the evacuation of nine villages – Agios Charalambos, Campi, Bougades, Anterazia, Kamaris (to Alyki), Agia riá, Trypiti, Aspro Chorio, Glyfa and Pyrgáki – with Agkairia added later. Residents were directed to the nearby beaches of Aliki, Alyki or Drys. The fire was classified as a category‑3 high‑risk incident, and smoke was visible on neighbouring Cycladic islands.

Around 66 firefighters, four forest‑raking teams, 16 fire‑engine vehicles, a helicopter and two Canadair aircraft were deployed, reinforced by crews from Athens, Naxos, Syros and the mainland. Additional Canadair drops, a second helicopter and roughly 20 extra firefighters with eight vehicles arrived by sea from Rafina, supporting night‑long aerial operations. No injuries were reported; damage was limited to warehouses, an animal shelter and some smoke‑affected structures, while residential buildings were largely spared. The island remained on fire‑risk category 3, and the Cyclades arson‑crime unit continues its investigation as ground and aerial assets stay on standby.
