Greek beach disability access challenges

In July 2026 the National Federation of Persons with Disabilities (ESAmeA) reported extensive delays and non‑functional equipment for autonomous beach‑access across Greece, citing unfinished installations in regions such as Thesprotia, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, as well as tourist sites like Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Zakynthos and the northeastern Aegean islands. ESAmeA warned that removed or inactive systems were depriving people with disabilities of safe beach access during the peak summer season and appealed to municipal authorities for urgent action.

A week later, MP Evangelia Liakouli raised a written question in parliament demanding answers from the interior, tourism and shipping ministers about the lack of accessible facilities on Thessaly’s coasts. She highlighted deteriorated wheelchair‑friendly installations, missing pathways, parking and sanitation, and called for proper allocation and monitoring of national and EU funds and a digital certification system for real‑time accessibility status.
