Greek Defence Minister official visits and military updates

Overview

Greek Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias conducted a series of official visits and announced strategic military decisions in September 2026.

On September 16, Dendias visited the island of Naxos via the naval frigate ‘Kimoni’. Accompanied by high-ranking military officers, the Minister held meetings and discussions aboard the vessel for what reports indicate were “operational purposes”.

Following a meeting of the Government National Security Council (KYSEA), Dendias announced a one-month extension of the Greek military presence (ELDYSA) in Saudi Arabia. The Patriot missile battery stationed in the Yanbu region will continue its mission to protect Saudi energy infrastructure from threats, such as drones and ballistic missiles attributed to Iran and the Houthis. This deployment is being reviewed monthly to adapt to changing geopolitical conditions.

On September 30, Dendias traveled to Nicosia, Cyprus, to mark the 66th anniversary of Cyprus' independence. During this visit, he met with Archbishop Georgios of the Church of Cyprus. Dendias expressed gratitude for the Church’s support of the Greek Armed Forces, specifically noting the renovation of the amphitheater at the Hellenic National Defence School (Evelpidon Military Academy). He described this contribution as a “tangible commitment to national efforts rather than mere verbal support”.

Dendias reaffirmed Greece's commitment to the island, stating, “Greece is and will be here,” and emphasized that national security requires robust defense capabilities through the “Agenda 2030.” The Archbishop stressed the importance of Greece remaining “closely aligned with Cyprus regarding defense matters,” noting that the Church’s support for the ‘Motherland’ is an obligation.
