Greek economic investment and digital infrastructure trends

Overview

Greece is experiencing a complex economic landscape characterized by structural investment gaps alongside significant growth in specific sectors. A study by the Center for Liberal Studies (KEFIM) noted that while the Greek capital market has raised 25.3 billion euros since 2019 and is expected to be classified as a ‘Developed Market’ integrated into the Euronext ecosystem by late September 2026, the country still faces a gap in gross fixed capital formation. Greece’s rate of 16.88% of GDP trails the EU-27 average of 21.32%, driven largely by lagging private and business investments.

Despite these broader structural challenges, Greece is emerging as a major hub for digital infrastructure. The country is seeing rapid growth in data center investments, with potential inflows exceeding €5 billion over the next five years. This includes the development of a hyperscale AI data center by the Public Power Corporation (PPC) in Kozani. Major international firms such as Microsoft, Digital Realty, and Data4 have entered the market, contributing to a projected increase in commercial colocation capacity from 31 MW in 2025 to 208 MW by 2031.
