Discussions regarding the Greek education system have historically centered on the integration of Ancient Greek and the evolving role of schools in shaping youth ethics as traditional social structures decline. Experts have noted that while infrastructure is important, the human element of teaching remains vital for social behavior. Building on these long-standing concerns, Greece has institutionalized ‘Ethics’ as a formal subject. While initially introduced for students in the 3rd through 6th grades of primary school, the curriculum has been expanded to run from the 3rd grade of primary school through the 3rd grade of high school across all school types. The Ministry of Education has clarified that ‘Ethics’ and religious studies are distinct subjects. While Orthodox Christian students attend religious studies, those who are exempt will attend Ethics classes. This marks the first time a continuous, comprehensive Ethics Education program has been established to cover nearly a student’s entire academic journey. According to the Institute of Educational Policy, the program aims to foster responsible, active, and democratic citizens. Rather than teaching a specific faith, the curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, argumentation, dialogue, empathy, justice, and respect for diversity, helping students evaluate different perspectives through reflection and debate. As the curriculum is implemented, academic commentary has raised questions regarding the pedagogical structure of the school system. Critics have noted a distinction between the scientific method used in subjects like biology and the metaphysical claims presented in religious education. They suggest that schools must clearly differentiate between teaching religious traditions as knowledge and presenting metaphysical claims as absolute truths.
