Greek Fire Service modernization and expansion

The Greek Fire Service is undergoing efforts to modernize its resources and expand its workforce. Data submitted to the Greek Parliament indicates that more than half of the service’s 4,407 vehicles, totaling 2,848 units, are over 15 years old.

To address this, the national civil protection program ‘AEGIS’ is working to renew the fleet. As of September 2026, 750 vehicles have been received out of a planned 1,400, with further deliveries expected through 2028. Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas noted that the operational suitability of the aging fleet is verified through annual inspections.

Parallel to equipment renewal, the Hellenic Fire Service has seen a significant increase in personnel. Since 2022, the workforce has grown by over 42%, rising from 13,000 to approximately 18,500 members. This expansion includes doubling academy admissions and hiring specialized professionals such as doctors, pilots, and engineers. Additional measures include the creation of 21 Forest Operation Units and the recruitment of 1,500 seasonal firefighters.
