Greek fisheries support and management initiatives

Overview

Greek regional and national authorities are implementing various financial support measures for the fisheries sector. In the South Aegean and Crete, authorities are finalizing a joint proposal to join a national pilot program aimed at managing the spread of lagokefalos. This scheme seeks to provide fishers with compensation of €5.33 per kilogram of affected fish caught, with the program intended to run until December 31, 2029.

Separately, the Ministry of Rural Development and Food has announced a €16 million funding program under the ‘Fisheries, Aquaculture and Sea 2021-2027’ initiative. This program supports investments in fishing vessels that do not increase overall capacity, targeting approximately 400 professional fishers and businesses. Funding rates for these investments range from 50% to 85%, with higher support levels available for small-scale coastal vessels and those operating in remote island regions.
