In early September 2026, the Greek football clubs Aris and Iraklis reached an agreement to facilitate ticket exchanges and fan travel for their upcoming derby matches in the Stoiximan Super League. This initiative, intended to foster a more positive atmosphere, was contingent upon approval from the Greek police and security authorities. However, subsequent developments highlighted the ongoing challenges regarding fan movement in Greek football. For an Iraklis fixture against Atromitos at Panthessaliko Stadium, the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports, via the General Regional Police Directorate of Thessaly, imposed a ban on the organized movement of fans and teams. This restriction drew criticism from organized supporters of Iraklis. Following these security restrictions, the match between Iraklis and Atromitos at Panthessaliko Stadium concluded in a 1-1 draw. Atromitos opened the scoring in the 24th minute via Tsiloúlis, a goal confirmed after a VAR review. Pedro Marques equalized for Iraklis in the 72nd minute. Although Marques appeared to score a second goal in stoppage time, the referee overturned the decision following a VAR review that identified an attacking foul by Kosta on Stavropoulos. The match also featured intense verbal exchanges between coaches, including Atromitos manager Dusan Kerkez, who criticized Iraklis manager Walter Mazzarri. In the aftermath of the match, Iraklis officials and club leadership strongly condemned the officiating decisions, labeling the disallowed stoppage-time goal a ‘robbery of the year’ and calling for the removal of the officiating crew. Following these matches, discussions have emerged regarding the implementation of Goal Line Cameras to address close calls where the ball appears to cross the line without a goal being awarded.
