The Greek government’s social assistance and housing architecture expanded in August through new childcare voucher developments and significant investments in student and national housing. In the childcare sector, the Hellenic Agency for Local Development and Municipalities (EETAA) finalized the 2026–2027 voucher program. Out of 199,138 valid applications, 158,009 children and persons with disabilities were awarded vouchers. While all nursery and kindergarten applications were approved, 41,129 applications for KΔAΠ (Centers for the Development of Children) were excluded due to high demand. Minister Domna Michailidou noted the program aims to expand access to preschool education, supported by new policies such as removing income criteria for large families and raising thresholds for others. Housing initiatives have seen massive expansion. The government approved the National Housing Strategy 2026-2035, a plan exceeding 6.5 billion euros designed to shift focus from subsidizing demand to increasing supply. Key measures include tax incentives for low-interest mortgages, reduced VAT for social housing construction, and a new Golden Visa category tied to long-term rentals. The strategy also includes AI-driven building permit digitization and housing support for public employees in island municipalities. To address student needs, the government launched a €3 million plan to utilize approximately 150 university-owned properties for housing and research. Regarding the ‘Anakainizo’ home renovation program, the deadline for owners of closed properties to issue eligibility certificates was extended from August 31 to September 30, 2026. As of early September 2026, the program has seen significant engagement, with over 91,000 applications receiving eligibility certifications. The program, which has a total budget of 2 billion euros, has reached a 95% absorption rate of its funds. Subsidies cover between 70% and 95% of renovation Of these, approximately 80,000 involve occupied homes, while more than 11,200 involve properties not used as primary residences in 2024 and energy upgrade costs, capped at 300 euros per square meter, with grants reaching up 2025. Recent regulatory changes now allow owners to 36,000 euros per home plus 2,500 euros apply for supplementary expenses. subsidies for multiple closed properties without a numerical limit.
