Greek healthcare regulation and private clinic oversight

Overview

Following the death of Georgios Mazonakis during a procedure at a private clinic in Kolonaki, Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis announced plans to ban misleading online advertisements for alternative therapies and ‘miracle’ treatments. The Minister expressed concern that wellness and longevity centers often operate in ‘gray zones,’ performing complex medical procedures like plasmapheresis under outpatient licenses rather than in hospital settings.

To address these regulatory gaps, Georgiadis intends to consult with medical associations and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens to establish clear boundaries between wellness services and regulated medical practices.

In the wake of the incident, public debate intensified regarding the safety of private medical facilities. Journalist Anthí Voulgári clarified her previous comments concerning clinic visits, noting her concerns were directed at a different facility in the southern suburbs where she was offered intravenous vitamin therapy. Minister Georgiadis responded by stating that the facility in question had been inspected and is “serious and well-regulated.”
