Greek hospital infrastructure and equipment concerns

Overview

Following the collapse of a ceiling in the newly renovated Emergency Department at the General Hospital of Corinth, which injured a doctor and a nurse, Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis faced criticism from union representatives. Union members described the incident as evidence of neglect and unsafe construction, stating that “the reality fell from the ceiling.” Georgiadis defended the renovation, suggesting staff may have pulled a curtain that tore the pseudo-ceiling, and asserted the building was sturdy.

Days later, a separate incident occurred at Venizelio Hospital in Heraklion, Crete, where approximately 1.5 square meters of plaster fell in an empty doctor's office. Minister Georgiadis defended the National Health System (ESY), telling critics, “Children, relax, the National Health System (ESY) is not collapsing.” He characterized the Crete incident as an “unforeseeable incident without relevant indications” and dismissed those highlighting such issues as a “gang of misery.”

In parallel, the opposition party SYRIZA has raised concerns regarding Attikon Hospital, alleging that both CT scanners at the facility are out of service due to technical failures. This has prompted inquiries regarding emergency diagnostic coverage and the status of the technical support company.

More recently, Georgiadis addressed claims regarding Attikon Hospital’s climate control following a viral video alleging air conditioning malfunctions. The hospital administration informed the Ministry that the central cooling system is in “excellent condition” following a recent reconstruction, attributing temperature issues to patients or companions opening clinic windows.
