Overview

In late July, civil‑society groups highlighted the consequences of Greece’s spatial‑planning approach, noting a gap between theory and practice that has allowed illegal construction and over‑development on islands and in mountain villages. The SOS programme of the Greek Environment and Culture Society collected complaints about landscape alteration, infrastructure strain and ecosystem threats, warning that unchecked tourism‑driven building has placed several islands on Europa Nostra’s “7 Under Threat” list.

The following day, the Greek Minister of National Economy and Finance, together with Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakas, presented a complementary government initiative. They called for a comprehensive, island‑centric strategy that links infrastructure, digital transformation, green and blue‑economy projects, and innovation to create quality jobs, and proposed a constitutional amendment to cement the islands’ role in Greece’s economic, security and energy future.
