Other Cretan locations also appeared in the global top 25, with Falassarna ranked 14th and Balos ranked 21st. The World’s 50 Best Beaches also recognized Fteri Beach on Kefalonia. Further accolades arrived via a report by the global ranking platform Billionhands, which identified Greece’s Elafonisi beach as holding the top position for the most spectacular beaches and coves in the Mediterranean, citing its unique pink sand and shallow, calm waters. Other highly-rated Greek destinations in this report included Balos Lagoon, Navagio Beach, Sarakiniko in Milos, and Porto Katsiki in Lefkada. However, this international acclaim has brought environmental concerns to the forefront. Elafonisi beach, despite its high visitor ratings and status as a protected Natura 2000 area, is facing significant challenges due to overtourism. The high volume of visitors has led to extreme crowding during peak periods, which threatens local marine species and the integrity of the area's ecosystem. Furthermore, authorities have noted reports of visitors illegally removing pink sand as souvenirs, despite prohibitions designed to protect the area's unique characteristics.
