Greek lignite power plant extension debates

Greek parliamentary discussions have centered on the operational future of lignite power plants and energy security. Initially, debates in Parliament addressed a draft law concerning the Ministry of Environment and Energy, specifically focusing on extending the operation of the Ptolemaida V plant to reduce electricity costs and reliance on imported natural gas. During these sessions, lawmakers also raised concerns regarding water management laws and their potential impact on regional water utilities.

Following these debates, MP Paris Koukouloupolous submitted a formal legislative amendment to extend the operation of several lignite units, including units III, IV, and V of the Agios Dimitrios plant and the Ptolemaida V unit. The proposal suggests these units operate outside energy exchange mechanisms until hydrocarbon production begins in Greek maritime areas, with specific time limits set for 2030, 2040, or 2050. The initiative is intended to support the Western Macedonia region and protect consumers from high energy costs during the energy transition.
