Greek maritime and port operational disruptions

Overview

Maritime operations in Greece have faced significant challenges due to both environmental and logistical factors. In mid-October, severe weather and gale-force winds reaching up to 9 Beaufort caused widespread disruptions to ferry services. The Hellenic Coast Guard implemented sailing bans at major ports including Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio, leading to numerous cancellations for routes to Crete and the Cyclades.

By late October, operational issues at the Port of Piraeus shifted from weather-related concerns to staffing shortages. The International Shipping Association in Greece (DNE) reported significant delays for scheduled line vessels, with some delays lasting between 1.5 and 8.5 hours. The DNE attributed these disruptions to insufficient staffing at the Piraeus Pilot Station, noting that shifts were being managed by only two to three pilots despite previous commitments to increase personnel.
