Greek municipal funding and administrative concerns
Overview
The Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) has warned of potential protests regarding the 2027 draft state budget. KEDE President Lazaros Kyrizoglou reported that projected transfers to local government organizations could decrease by approximately €670 million, falling from €6.575 billion in 2026 to €5.905 billion in 2027. The union argued this reduction contradicts improving fiscal indicators and is calling for a readjustment of Central Autonomous Resources before the budget is submitted to Parliament.
In response to these financial and operational challenges, KEDE scheduled its Annual Regular Congress in Kalamata for November 5 to November 7, 2026. The congress aims to gather over 1,000 delegates to discuss municipal administrative organization, financial autonomy, staffing, and climate resilience. Regional leaders, such as Nikos Sakkas, intend to use the platform to advocate for addressing economic constraints, rising energy costs, and staffing shortages.
