Greek municipal stray animal welfare initiatives
Overview
Greek municipalities are implementing various initiatives to manage and protect stray animals through sterilization, awareness, and education.
In Kozani, local authorities confirmed that the stray animal management program, which includes an independent office established in November 2023, will continue following the resignation of a special collaborator. Previous efforts in the region have focused on increasing sterilization and enhancing services. Similarly, the Municipality of Drama organized an awareness event featuring legal and veterinary experts, animal training demonstrations, and a three-day mass sterilization program to address overpopulation.
Expanding these efforts into educational settings, the Municipality of Nafpaktia launched the ‘Pets-Family Members’ program in collaboration with the Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation. This initiative targeted students in local schools to teach responsible pet ownership, the prevention of animal abandonment, and safe interaction with companion animals.
