Greek olive oil quality and research initiatives
Overview
In late September and early October 2026, initiatives to enhance the quality and economic value of Greek olive oil expanded through scientific advocacy and localized producer training.
At a scientific conference in Heraklion, Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food Giannis Andrianos emphasized using scientific research and documentation to protect the authenticity of Greek products, specifically the Koroneiki variety, in global markets. Regulatory updates noted that the International Olive Council has maintained a specific minimum threshold of 800 mg/kg for monovarietal Koroneiki extra virgin olive oils—lower than the general 1,000 mg/kg limit—while removing previous time restrictions on this exception. To manage environmental risks, the ministry established a multi-year procurement plan for olive fruit fly combat materials for the 2026–2028 period.
Simultaneously, the Region of Crete, the Hellenic Mediterranean University, and the Hellenic Agricultural Organization ‘DEMETER’ launched educational training sessions as part of the ‘Crete European Region of Gastronomy 2026’ project. Following initial sessions in Heraklion and Viannos, the program expanded to municipalities including Rethymno, Faistos, Hersonissos, and Platanias. These sessions provide producers, millers, and standardizers with instruction on cultivation best practices, harvesting, contamination prevention, and the ELGO-DEMETER PDO/PGI certification and control system to maintain ‘Kriti’ PDO Extra Virgin Olive Oil standards.
