Greek railway projects and EU funding

In late July 2026 Greece saw two separate railway initiatives advance with European Union financial support. On 27 July, the Western Attica Suburban Railway project, previously stalled by technical, licensing and legal hurdles, was confirmed to continue under the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility. About 53 % of the physical works—worth €56.13 million net of VAT—had already been completed, and a revised financing plan kept the total EU allocation intact while reallocating resources to other mature projects.

The following day, the Regional Government of Western Macedonia applied for €5 million from the EU Operational Programme for Fair Development Transition to fund feasibility studies for a new Kozani‑Veria railway line. The study would cover technical and environmental assessments, marking the first step toward implementation. Local groups raised concerns about the focus on Kozani, but officials highlighted the EU’s emphasis on rail as a sustainable transport mode and its potential to boost northern Greece’s economy.

Together, these developments illustrate a broader pattern of Greek rail infrastructure projects seeking and receiving EU funding to overcome delays, conduct preparatory work, and promote regional growth.
