Greek regional relocation and farmer aid

In late July 2026 the Greek government, led by Minister Domna Michailidou, broadened its regional development agenda. On 21 July the relocation incentive scheme for the Evros border area and other peripheral municipalities was expanded: the grant rose to €10,000 per household, a 50 % advance payment was introduced, the need for an employment contract was dropped, and eligibility was widened to include EU residents and university graduates living in target towns. The changes were aimed at simplifying participation and encouraging settlement in under‑populated zones.

A week later, on 27 July, the Organisation of Social Insurance and Welfare (OPEKA) announced a complementary support package for 27,500 Greek farmers. The programme offered free holiday stays on selected Aegean islands and mainland regions, subsidised spa tourism, child‑camp activities and scholarships for high‑scoring students. Additional cash assistance targeted mothers with three or more children, and funding was earmarked for accommodation providers in Evros and islands such as Lesvos, Limnos, Ikaria, Kos and Rhodes. This broader welfare drive sought to improve rural welfare, stimulate tourism and reinforce the earlier relocation effort by addressing economic needs across the same peripheral areas.

Together, the two initiatives illustrate a coordinated push by the Greek authorities to revitalize sparsely populated border regions and island communities through financial incentives, housing support and targeted rural development measures.
