Greek shipping dominance amidst EU LNG sanctions debate

Greek‑owned tankers continued to control a large share of Russian crude and LNG flows in early 2026, generating close to $4 billion in freight fees. The sector’s influence grew as Performance Shipping extended an Aframax charter on 14 July and Andriaki Shipping ordered two LR1 product carriers from Chinese yards.

Greek ministers repeatedly opposed the EU’s 21st sanctions package, which includes a blanket ban on Russian LNG shipments slated for 2027. Athens argued the measure would jeopardise firms such as Dynagas, force the sale of its 27‑ship fleet and cost up to 2 000 jobs, while merely shifting cargoes to non‑EU vessels.

On 19 July Dynagas warned that a horizontal EU prohibition would not curb Russian gas exports but would erode European Arctic‑shipping expertise and market share. The company highlighted its fifteen Arc7/Ice‑Class carriers, bound to Yamal LNG contracts through 2065 with investors from Russia, France, Germany and Spain, and called for a policy that balances geopolitical aims with the competitiveness of European shipping.

The following day EU ambassadors met in Brussels. Greece’s veto forced the Commission to reconsider the LNG clause, prompting negotiations on exemptions or a transition period. Other member states raised separate objections, keeping the final outcome uncertain as the EU seeks unanimity.

The debate remains unresolved, with Greek shipping’s economic stakes shaping the EU’s approach to Russian energy sanctions.
