Greek student housing crisis

The student housing crisis in Greece has drawn criticism from political organizations and student unions, who argue that existing dormitory capacity is insufficient to meet demand. The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) reported that current dormitories cover only 7% of the actual need, criticizing government plans to use Public-Private Partnerships to expand capacity as a way to treat housing as a “profit-making opportunity for business groups.” The KKE called for state-funded public dormitories and increased housing allowances.

Following these concerns, student unions in Kalamata held protests at the University of Peloponnese, noting that nationwide dormitory coverage may be as low as 4.8%. In Kalamata, students highlighted that high rental costs—with the city ranking seventh in Greece for highest rents—are negatively impacting academic attendance. Protesters demanded that the monthly housing allowance be increased to at least 500 euros and criticized the current allowance of 166 euros for regional universities, noting that its year-end payment schedule forces families to cover upfront rental costs.
