Greek university admission quotas for disaster-hit regions

Overview

The Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports established special university admission quotas for the 2026-2027 academic year to support students from regions impacted by natural disasters. This measure applies to final-year students and graduates of General and Vocational Lyceums who participated in the June 2026 Panhellenic Examinations. Eligible areas include various municipalities across Attica, North Aegean, Western Greece, Epirus, Central Macedonia, South Aegean, Peloponnese, Central Greece, and Crete.

Following the announcement, the Municipality of West Achaia requested an immediate amendment to the ministerial decision. Local officials argued that the municipality was omitted from the quota despite suffering severe damage from a major wildfire in August 2025 and facing livestock losses from hailstorms. While the ministry’s decision included fire-affected areas within the Municipality of Patras, West Achaia officials noted that their requests for inclusion, dating back to December 2025, were not reflected in the final regulation.
