In early August 2026 a major wildfire swept parts of Attica and Boeotia, killing a Danish pilot and a Greek fire‑service coordinator when two firefighting helicopters collided. The government package provides full coverage for home repairs, up to €6,000 for primary residences, rent subsidies of €300‑€500 per month, an immediate €600 cash grant, and a 70 % grant for business losses. Deputy Minister Kostas Katsafados was tasked with briefing the prime minister on implementation schedules, signalling a coordinated effort to deliver compensation and support to affected communities. Further investigations revealed that the blaze ignited on 31 July 2026 near Kalami in Boeotia’s Platyas area and, driven by strong north winds, spread across more than 113 sq km of forest, farmland and settlements, reaching Western Attica and towns such as Porto Germeno, Alepochori and Megara. Governor Chardalias reiterated the “zero‑tolerance” policy, filing a formal complaint to support arson charges against suspected perpetrators. During site visits, Androulakis warned that the climate crisis must not excuse inadequate state preparedness, while Climate‑Crisis Minister Euaggelos Tournas toured the fire zones to express solidarity with emergency crews.
