Greenland Energy unauthorized drilling dispute

The Texas-based Greenland Energy Company has engaged in unauthorized activities on Greenland’s east coast. The Greenlandic government reported that a vessel operated by Permagreen unloaded an excavator and 15 containers of equipment at the port of Nerlerit Inaat without necessary permits. The Ministry of Energy noted the company lacks authorization to explore in Jameson Land, a protected wetland under the Ramsar Convention. In response, the Greenlandic government halted the project, stating administrative procedures could not be completed before the company’s proposed winter drilling schedule.

In an attempt to secure drilling permissions, Greenland Energy has proposed a strategy called ‘seal skin diplomacy.’ This plan suggests that the United States and Europe could purchase discarded seal skins from locals to appease the population and facilitate resource access. The company claims Jameson Land may hold up to $1 trillion worth of crude oil. However, the proposal faces significant legal obstacles, as the sale of seal skins is currently prohibited in Europe and has been banned in the United States since the 1970s. The company’s pursuit of Arctic resources continues to raise concerns regarding Greenlandic sovereignty.
