Groningen provincial development initiatives

Overview

The Province of Groningen has launched several regional development initiatives focused on infrastructure and environmental resilience.

To address digital connectivity gaps in rural areas following the 2023 bankruptcy of the company Rodin, the province initiated a market consultation to plan for high-speed internet deployment. While fiber optics remains the preferred method, officials are considering wireless or satellite options for difficult locations. A provisional budget of up to 25 million euros has been reserved under the ‘Nij Begun’ economic agenda, though officials noted this may not cover all remaining needs.

Parallel to digital efforts, the province introduced a subsidy scheme to improve the climate resilience of industrial estates. This program provides funding for entrepreneurs and municipalities to implement measures such as increasing rainwater absorption, planting vegetation, and reducing paved surfaces to mitigate the impacts of heat, drought, and heavy rainfall.
