Groundforce strike at Barcelona airport continues
Entities: Groundforce · Barcelona‑El Prat Airport · CGT · Air Europa · Spanish Ministry of Transport
Overview
The CGT‑led indefinite strike by Groundforce staff at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona‑El Prat Airport began at midnight on 4 August 2026, involving about 1,179 ground‑handling employees. The walkout, driven by complaints of excessive workloads, insufficient training and deteriorating health‑and‑safety conditions, affects check‑in, baggage, boarding and flight‑coordination services for airlines such as Air Europa, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, United, Etihad, ITA Airways and Finnair.
By the second day of the action, 18 flights had been cancelled and many more delayed, threatening the movement of up to 2 million passengers through September. The Spanish Ministry of Transport has imposed minimum service levels for emergency, non‑peninsular domestic and a share of international and short‑haul flights, but the disruption continues to impact routes to Germany, Italy, Austria and other destinations. Aena has not issued an official statement, and airlines are advised to monitor flight status closely as queues and delays are expected throughout the peak summer travel period.
