Groundwater monitoring and transparency disputes in Croatia
Overview
Political disputes regarding groundwater quality and transparency have emerged in different Croatian municipalities.
In Dubrovnik, City Councilor Anita Bonačić Obradović accused Mayor Mato Franković of withholding environmental data for nearly three years. She alleged that laboratory results from late 2023 showed heavy pollution in the groundwater beneath Grabovica, which could impact the Ombla river source. The utility company, Vodovod Dubrovnik, defended the water supply, stating that it undergoes rigorous treatment to meet European Union standards and is monitored by the Croatian Institute of Public Health.
In Varaždin, Mayor Neven Bosilj initiated additional groundwater monitoring by activating piezometers in the former Mundus area near the Bartolovec water pump station. Bosilj cited a need for transparency and citizen safety, while criticizing the erosion of public trust. In response, Milan Rezo, Director of Croatian Waters for the Mura and Gornja Drava region, argued that local political responsibilities should remain separate from professional legal competencies.
