Grupa Azoty wage dispute escalates

Overview

In mid‑July 2026, unions at Grupa Azoty’s Puławy plant presented a 13‑point demand list, seeking a net salary rise of 1,500 zł per month by 1 September and a bonus linked to the national average wage. The unions warned of a possible collective dispute if their proposals were not accepted within a week. A week later the dispute broadened into an emergency strike at multiple sites, including Kędzierzyn‑Koźle, Police, Puławy, Grzybów and Tarnów. Unions reiterated the 1,500 zł net increase, now retroactive to 1 June, and added calls for seniority bonuses, shift allowances, reduced hours and reinstatement of previously suspended bonuses. Management stressed financial and organisational limits, noting that fully meeting the demands could raise payroll costs by over 140 million zł annually, and scheduled a meeting with union representatives for 28 August. On 23 July, three unions—including Solidarność—expanded their demands, urging greater transparency on the company’s finances, involvement in organisational changes, and a raise in seniority allowances. The company highlighted that total payroll in 2025 already amounted to 1.9 billion zł (13.7 % of operating expenses) and warned that the new demands could add more than 20 million zł to monthly wage expenses. Union leaders described recent management visits as “PR‑stunts” and reported a sharp decline in employee morale. By 28 July, the dispute had further widened. Workers from five unions, including NSZZ Solidarność, announced an emergency strike at key plants such as Puławy and Police, now demanding a 1,000‑zł gross wage increase, reinstatement of the Barbórka bonus, and equalisation of social benefits suspended in 2024. They also called for independent safety audits of plant installations. The firm’s CEO, Marcin Celejewski, argued that many of the points were already covered by recent agreements and cited a profit boost from record sulfur prices.
