Guadalajara water quality protests
Overview
Residents in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, including El Sauz and San Pedro Tlaquepaque, staged protests on October 5, 2026, to demand action regarding poor water quality. Demonstrators blocked Colón Avenue and the tracks of Line 1 of the Guadalajara Light Rail, resulting in a five-hour suspension of service.
Protesters reported that the water supply contained sediments, unpleasant odors, and dark or yellowish discoloration, rendering it unfit for hygiene, cooking, or drinking. In response, the water utility SIAPA noted that supply from the Las Pintas dam travels through an old system and stated that efforts are underway to clean distribution lines and strengthen the Miravalle Potabilization Plant No. 1.
Following the demonstrations, the Urban Electric Train System (SITEUR) began restoring service to Line 1. Residents have requested transparent public studies to identify the exact composition of the distributed water.
