Guatemala 2027 general election preparations
Overview
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has initiated the preparatory phase for the 2027 presidential and vice-presidential elections. This includes the commencement of the electoral propaganda period, which runs from October 27, 2026, through February 24, 2027, and a public contest to design the official logo, slogan, and jingle for the elections.
As preparations continue, the TSE has identified over 50 municipalities at risk of electoral violence. Magistrates warned of potential disturbances, specifically regarding political violence against women and irregular voter transfers. To address these risks, the TSE is coordinating with the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Defense, the Human Rights Ombudsman, and the Attorney General’s Office.
Concerns have also been raised regarding voter registry fraud, such as the use of false addresses to alter voter rolls. Additionally, civil society leaders expressed alarm over potential political violence following the assassination of former anti-corruption prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa, noting that organizers of a citizen congress reported receiving death threats.
