Guatemala’s Commission for Financial Inclusion (COMIF) has initiated the second phase of the National Financial Inclusion Strategy (ENIF). This stage transitions from increasing bank account access—which has risen from 37% to approximately 69% of adults—to expanding credit availability for households, entrepreneurs, and micro- and medium-sized enterprises. While overall financial inclusion reaches roughly 85% when including fintech and cooperative users, only 16.7% of the population currently holds a loan. The new phase seeks to address this gap by promoting digital payments, increasing savings, and fostering responsible credit to drive economic development. In a recent development related to expanding financial access, Guatemala’s National Mortgage Credit (CHN) has partnered with the Metropolitan Housing and Urban Development Company (EMVDU) to expand housing finance options for families.
