Guatemala security and economic development initiative

Overview

The Foundation for Development of Guatemala (FUNDESA) has announced the theme for the 20th National Meeting of Entrepreneurs for Development (ENADE 2026), scheduled for October 8. Under the theme “A Paso Seguro – Integral security is the path to prosperity,” the forum will address the connection between public security and economic growth.

FUNDESA reports that crime and criminal ecosystems cost Guatemala approximately 7% to 7.7% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). While the national homicide rate has decreased from 31 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2014 to 16 currently, the rate has recently stagnated.

To address this, ENADE 2026 proposes a long-term objective to reduce the homicide rate by half, targeting 8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants by the year 2036. Achieving this goal is expected to require strengthened institutions, improved coordination between entities, and increased investment to combat challenges such as extortion and organized crime.
