Guinea bauxite and alumina industry transition
Overview
Guinea is attempting to transition its economy from a raw bauxite exporter to a domestic alumina producer. While bauxite exports grew significantly during the 2010s, experts have noted that the current legal and regulatory frameworks are “fragmented and blurry,” lacking the necessary structures to manage refineries or account for the differing commercial values of ore and alumina.
In a recent development, the Swiss commodities group Glencore entered into a $300 million pre-financing and offtake agreement with Guinea’s state-owned Nimba Mining Company. The deal allows Glencore to market between 10 million and 12 million tonnes of bauxite annually for five years. Following this agreement, the Guinean government expressed interest in expanding the partnership to include value-added sectors such as alumina refining and energy investments.
