Gujarat infrastructure and urban development initiatives
Overview
The Gujarat state government has initiated several large-scale infrastructure and development projects. Initial efforts focused on heritage redevelopment and regional utility upgrades, including the completion of two phases of a ₹359 crore master plan for the Champaner-Pavagadh UNESCO World Heritage site. Additionally, projects worth over ₹815 crore were launched in the Gandhinagar and Sabarkantha districts, covering bridges, health centers, irrigation barrages, and civil hospitals.
Following these regional and heritage works, the state expanded its focus to urban infrastructure through the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel allocated 3,850 crore rupees to 17 municipal corporations and 152 municipalities. The funding is intended for urban development, with official directives emphasizing high-quality road construction, the integration of greenery in town planning, and climate change considerations in infrastructure planning.
Recent budgetary expansions show a significant scale-up in urban investment. Minister Jitu Vaghani stated that the allocation for 2025-26 has reached approximately Rs 30,325 crore, a more than 40 per cent increase from the previous year. Over the last five years, more than Rs 92,000 crore has been allocated for the welfare and development of the state’s urban population.
To ensure the effective use of these funds, Chief Minister Patel has directed municipal corporations to monitor the status of both completed and new projects. Specific technical and environmental mandates include the use of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) for new roads, an increased focus on urban cleanliness, and the reservation of approximately one per cent of land in new town planning schemes for greenery, such as parks and oxygen parks.
