Guyana Berbice deepwater port development
Overview
Guyana is actively seeking international financing and investment for a proposed deepwater port in Berbice, estimated to cost between US$1 billion and US$2 billion. The project aims to support the nation’s offshore oil economy and establish a trade corridor for northern Brazil.
Following reports that Chevron declined to fund the remaining components of a feasibility study, President Irfaan Ali indicated that the government is engaging potential partners such as the US Export-Import Bank, the United Kingdom, and the Qatar Investment Authority. The feasibility study is expected to be completed by December.
Concurrently, the Private Sector Commission (PSC) of Guyana has held discussions with Cross Boundary Advisory to explore infrastructure development and demand profiles for the port in New Amsterdam. These discussions highlighted the port’s potential to connect local production to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) food market and regional connections to Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados. The PSC is also considering land-use planning for shore bases and data centres to facilitate further investment.
