Uruguay declared a nationwide health emergency after highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza was confirmed in backyard birds in the Colonia department. The outbreak, identified as Foco 9/2026, was detected on a subsistence property near Barker. In response, the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) prohibited the movement of unregistered poultry and required backyard and free-range birds to be kept in closed, roofed facilities.
