Haitian migrant protests and consular crisis in Chile

On August 22, 2026, demonstrators forced entry into the embassy premises in Providencia. Community spokesperson David Antoine attributed the unrest to poor embassy management and misinformation, noting that the National Migration Service has implemented criteria that hinder document processing. The situation escalated as protesters damaged embassy barriers, requiring intervention by Chilean police, the Haitian Chargé d'Affaires, and agents from Haiti’s Direction Centrale de la Police Judiciaire.

In response to the crisis, the Haitian government has deployed a special mission to Santiago. This mission includes officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cults (MAEC) and investigators from the Central Judicial Police Directorate (DCPJ) to expedite the issuance of national identity cards and criminal record certificates.

Authorities have also implemented a free online appointment system via the official embassy website to combat fraud and the exploitation of migrants by unauthorized intermediaries. The Haitian community in Chile is estimated to be between 180,000 and 200,000 people, representing a significant economic link through remittances.
