The horror video game ‘Halloween: The Game’, developed by IllFonic and Gun Interactive, features asymmetric multiplayer and a single-player story mode centered on Michael Myers. The game was announced for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC, with physical editions scheduled for October 6, 2026. However, the PlayStation 5 version has been blocked from release in Japan. Developer IllFonic confirmed that the country’s age rating organization, CERO, blocked the console version due to “extreme violence and nudity in the plot.” IllFonic stated they declined to censor or alter the content to meet rating requirements to avoid compromising the “original film’s vision and the intended player experience.” While the PS5 version is unavailable in Japan, the game will still be accessible in that market on PC and Xbox Series consoles. Following its announcement, the game officially launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The single-player campaign consists of six chapters narrated by Dr. Sam Loomis, set during the 1978 Halloween night in Haddonfield. The multiplayer mode utilizes Unreal Engine 5 to facilitate 1v4 matches where one player controls Michael Myers against four survivors. Upon launch, the game achieved significant commercial success, attracting over 500,000 players across PC and consoles within hours. On Steam, the title reached a 24-hour peak of more than 33,000 concurrent players, which is noted as the largest Steam launch for an asymmetrical multiplayer horror game, surpassing the debuts of titles like ‘Dead by Daylight’ and ‘Friday the 13th: The Game’. To support the launch, IllFonic released an update a Day-One patch (version 1.0.1) to address technical issues, issues including NPC navigation, civilian detection ranges, and detection, cross-play functionality. To reward early players, the developer offered 5,000 free Perk points for logins completed before September 8, 2026. functionality, and stamina system adjustments.
