Hanau mayoral leadership transition

Overview

Claus Kaminsky, the longest-serving Lord Mayor in Hesse, is retiring from his position in Hanau at the end of September. During a farewell ceremony, Kaminsky was named an honorary citizen of the city. Hesse's Interior Minister, Roman Poseck, described him as an “honest and authentic” leader who guided the city through milestones such as gaining independence from the Main-Kinzig district and managing the aftermath of the February 19, 2020, racist attack.

Following this transition, Maximilian Bieri, a 36-year-old Social Democrat (SPD), was officially sworn in as the new Lord Mayor. Bieri, a mathematician with a doctorate, becomes the youngest Lord Mayor in the state of Hesse. In his inaugural address, he characterized the administration of Hanau as managing a “small billion-euro company” and emphasized the importance of building bridges and establishing trust.
