In mid‑July 2026, former Kosovo president Hashim Thaçi asked the Hague Special Court for conditional release while his war‑crimes trial proceeds. His defence offered a €50,000 financial guarantee and proposed strict conditions, including surrendering travel documents, limiting public statements, and weekly police verification. Two weeks later, Thaçi withdrew a request to lift a visitor ban on ten individuals, arguing the ban should not affect the judicial process. On 25 July, former Kosovo Assembly speaker Jakup Krasniqi told RTK from pre‑trial detention that he is confident the September 16 judgment will affirm the Kosovo Liberation Army’s legitimacy and that justice will ultimately prevail. Thaçi’s defence again cited reiterated the €50,000 cash‑bond and guarantee, and the surrender of – with his passport, brother and close friends as safeguards guarantors – as a safeguard against flight risk.
