Hawaiian Iveron Icon visit to Bulgaria
Overview
A printed copy of the myrrh‑streaming Hawaiian Iveron Icon of the Mother of God arrived in Bulgaria at the end of July 2026. The icon was welcomed at Sofia’s Vasil Levski Airport by Patriarch Daniel of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Daniel, and other clergy, including Bishop Iriney (London and Western Europe), following a decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCOR).
It was first placed in the historic St. Sophia Church, where Patriarch Daniel celebrated a Divine Liturgy and a water‑blessing of the Holy Cross. A large crowd gathered for prayer, and two miracles were reported on the first day. The icon was also described as a photographic copy of the lost Montreal Icon.
Over the following weeks, the icon traveled to several locations, including St. Marina, St. Nedelya, Samokov, Ihtiman, and Dupnitsa. During its time in Varna, it was displayed at the St. Marina University Hospital for pediatric oncology and hematology, where Metropolitan Ioan of Varna and Veliki Preslav led prayers for the health of children and medical staff.
The tour culminated in an exhibition at Rila Monastery on 17–18 August, coinciding with the feast of the Dormition of St. John of Rila. The icon departed Bulgaria on 19 August. The visit was recognized as a major spiritual event for Orthodox believers, with the icon noted for its ability to emit fragrant myrrh.
